Fabulous Antique Two Volume Set of
Soll und Haben
by Gustav Freytag
Printed in Leipzig, Germany
1901
Gustav Freytag (1816–95) was a German novelist and playwright. He taught at the University of Breslau and edited the Grenzboten (1848–70). He wrote realistic novels celebrating the merits of the middle classes. Perhaps his best-known work is Soll und Haben (1855-1856), translated Debit and Credit. This novel celebrates the solid bourgeois qualities of the German merchants and brings out the close relationships between people's characters and the work they do. He championed the thriving middle classes as a parliamentary force, notably in the novel Soll und Haben. It is a fond, vivid, and humorous depiction of commercial daily life, and won Freytag a large readership. Freytag made his mark not just as a Realist writer, but as a formative force in bourgeois culture.
