Primitive matte finish on this folk-art style tankard, which depicts a fox hunt on a sunny day in a green meadow. Simple design, five colors throughout: Cobalt blue trim at top and bottom, in the hunters' clothes, spanning the sky behind the scene, and in the stamens of the poinsettia -like flowers which frame the landscape. Auburn and brown dogs and horses. Green grass, light beige background with darker beige on the inner trim and handle. Intricate molding gives a third dimension to the scene and trim. Carelessly applied outer glaze indicates by-hand application many years ago, perhaps with the commonplace use of child labor to make souvenirs. Bottom is printed "Made in Japan".Dimensions: Approximately 6.5 inches tall, 2.75 inches across the top and 3.625 inches across the bottom.Condition: Very good - no chips or obvious wear to the design. A 1-inch hairline visible from the inside. Some crazing can be seen on the bottom. A drip of silver glaze descends from the handle to the bottom rim. |
