Switch Grass ( Panicum virgatum)
Switch Grass plant, also known as Panic Grass, is native to the Mid-Atlantic region. This grass has so many uses. It can be grown virtually anywhere from the marshes to dry sandy areas. Makes a great ornamental when grown alone or in a stand. Has tremendous wildlife value. Great for erosion control and is now being looked at as an alternative to corn for making ethanol because it is easier to grow. The plant will come to you in a 3.5 inch pot. Soak thoroughly before planting. Water regularly until established.
Description: Switch grass can grow from 3 - 7 feet tall. Leaves are semi-broad, about ½ inch wide, green with a red tint. Flowers are panicles, up to 10 inches, which are a reddish color and when blooming give a pink-like haze. Seeds form shortly thereafter.
Culture: Sun to part shade. Soil moist to dry. Can tolerate some salt. Bloom time is July - August. Zones 3 - 8.
Companion plants: Nearly anything will go with switch grass, provided they are chosen for the site conditions.
Wildlife benefit: Supplies song and ground birds with insect habitats, seed, nesting materials and ground cover and forage for other wildlife.

Native plant range and our shipping (PLEASE READ)
Most of our plants are also found native to the Midwest, however that is generally the extent of their range. In an effort to keep our native plants native to their natural range, we do not ship west of the Great Plain States. This includes Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii. If you live in these states, please do not order.
