 Description:

Offered today from my personal collection of antique photography is a very rare 9th plate Daguerreotype photo of a good looking young man with moustache in nice suit & big bow tie. Dag is in a fair condition brass mat & outer brass ornate frame inside worn half case. Dag is in just fair condition & very sharp with some scratches & scuffs in the coating here & there. Image is showing silvering deterioration at right side of photo which is common with these types of photos. Somebody at some time evidently tried to wipe this Dag clean which is the wrong thing to do, as that destroys the delicate coating which makes the image appear. Estimated age is pre civil war period c.1839-60. This would be a wonderful addition to any collection of antique photography. Offered today at a very reasonable $12.99 and shipping by regular air(not insured) is just $7.00($6.00 shipping + $1.00 padded envelope). EMS insured shipping is available for more! I do offer shipping discounts on multiple purchases, so buy more & save!! Any questions please contact Greg at gregphotos4u@aol.com. Thanks for reading!

A Daguerreotype photo is an image produced on a silver coated copper plate. Sensitizing agent: iodine; developing agent: mercury. Invented by Frenchman Louis-Jacque-Mande Daguerre. First introduced in 1839 and peak years were 1852-1854. Dag production waned from 1858-1860 after the introduction of the cheaper & more durable tintype. Daguerreotypes were more expensive to produce & they needed to be in hard cases to protect the image from sunlight & damage. Many types of hard cases, both pressed wood embossed with designs & thermoplastic were used & many collectors specialize in collecting these fine cases! The daguerreotype is perhaps the most "brilliant" of early images, usually exhibiting a wide tonal range with rich blacks and bright whites as compared to usually "lackluster" ambrotypes and tintypes. (From "Early Photographs" by O. Henry Mace)
