Offered today from my personal collection of antique photography is a very nice 9th plate Ambrotype photo of a pretty young woman in nice dress. Her cheeks are tinted & she has long dangling earrings. Ambro is in a very nice condition brass mat & outer brass ornate frame inside a full case that latches. Ambro is in very good condition & very sharp with just some clouding on the inside of glass which could be cleaned if desired. Full case in good condition with nice design and cartouche with a vase of roses in center on both sides. Estimated age is civil war period c.1854-65. This would be a wonderful addition to any collection of antique photography. An Ambrotype photo is a negative image produced on a glass plate, viewed as a positive by the addition of a black backing. Sensitizing agent: silver nitrate; developing agent pyrogallic acid. Invented by Frederick Scott Archer (Britain) and popularized by James Cutting (United States). First introduced in 1854 and peak years were 1857-1859. Ambrotype production waned from 1861-1865 after the introduction of the cheaper & more durable tintype. Ambrotypes were more expensive to produce & they needed to be in hard cases to protect the glass from breakage. Many types of hard cases, both pressed wood embossed with designs & thermoplastic were used & many collectors specialize in collecting these fine cases!
