MARTYRS OF THE OBLONG AND LITTLE NINE By Smith, DeCost. Published by The Caxton Printers Caldwell, Idaho. 1948 1st. Limited edition this is 493 of 1,000 copies. NO DJ. About clash of cultures created in the Mohican tribe after it was converted to Christianity by the Moravian Brethren. An account of the Mohican conversion to Christianity by the Moravians, and of their persecution and martyrdom.
This is the story of Shekomeko, Indian Lake near Millerton and Kent, Ct. where the peaceful Mohicans who had escaped from the Iroqouis Wars lived until the German and Dutch farmers from Dutchess county had them exiled west. This happened in 1745 and hundreds died crossing the Hudson. An early tale of persecution and ethnic cleansing. A very good reading copy.
